Then about an hour's hike into where we are staying at Arrecifes Beach which is notorious for its strong currents; 100s of people have drowned here. I read about it last year in the "The Gringo Trail" book.
We had "snacks" at the small shop, an activity which I found annoying as further on there were good little eating places with local food like arepas and a wonderful panaderia (bakery) - set in the middle of the jungle! - which I had read about and which had the most wonderful freshly baked bread rolls. Our guide set off from the first snack bar and walked straight past this one. I detoured from following the group and took a chance on finding the trail that the group was taking. I bought the most delicious bun stuffed with hot chocolate. Just yum!
The group wasn't far ahead anyway and we soon all split up to pursue individual activities like hiking, swimming, sunbaking, eating. My Friend and I definitely gave the sunbaking a miss.
It was very pretty. Clear blue water, nice beaches lined with palms, some bays protected by reefs, others wild with churning water.
I wouldn't travel to Colombia just to visit Tayrona; we have lovely beach/coastal national parks in Australia. But a visit to Tayrona is one of the must-do things in Colombia and does complete the package.
Postscript: Spent a seriously ordinary night in hammocks with the constant buzz of mosquitoes beyond the confines of the netting - and not always "beyond"!
